Planning doula support
at Sibley Memorial Hospital
Start with the logistics.
A practical guide for families preparing for a birth at Sibley in Washington, D.C.
Motha Doula is not affiliated with Johns Hopkins Medicine or Sibley Memorial Hospital. This page does not state that Tenise Foxx has attended births at, is credentialed with, or is approved by Sibley. Confirm credentials, access requirements, availability, and service terms directly.
Sibley publishes maternity registration information that can help families plan ahead. Its current page says to complete maternity preregistration before the eighth month of pregnancy and notes that the obstetrician must have admitting privileges at Sibley for a delivery there. If registration cannot be completed beforehand, the hospital asks families to allow extra time on arrival. Its page also advises checking insurance coverage or pre-authorization requirements.
Those are facility logistics. Ask separately about a doula. Call the maternity unit or admissions office to confirm current registration steps, how a privately hired doula is handled, the number of people allowed during labor and surgery, and whether any credential or identification rules apply. Ask how policies may differ during labor, a C-section, and recovery.
Prepare for a conversation
that keeps you included.
Bring a short list to a prenatal appointment: your provider’s admitting privileges, the hospital’s arrival process, the support people you hope to include, and the questions you want answered before a decision. If you prefer information explained in a particular way or need an interpreter or accommodation, ask the provider or hospital how to arrange it ahead of time.
A doula may help you rehearse questions, discuss your preferences, and support your chosen people. She does not provide medical care, interpret clinical recommendations, or control hospital policy. Ask what she would do if plans change or the number of people in the room is limited.
Questions for a doula consultation
- Do you travel to my location and attend births at Sibley?
- What are your credentials, and what does Sibley currently require?
- How do you work with my OB, midwife, partner, and other support people?
- What are your availability, backup plan, fees, and payment terms?
- What can I expect from your support if I have an epidural, a C-section, or a change in plans?
- How can I confirm Medicaid or insurance coverage before agreeing to fees?
